PURPOSE:To increase the binding capacity and enhance the strength of the negative elctrode without causing any deterioration of ionic diffusion within the negative electrodes, by adding boron oxide to zinc powder to make a mixture, and followed by a heat treatment of the mixture at a temperature at which boron oxide is vitrified. CONSTITUTION:A chemical compound whose main component is boron oxide is added to zinc powder to make a mixture, which is compressed and molded. The molded body is subjected to a heat treatmemt to make the boron oxide to be vitrified, thus a molded negative electrode being made. The addition amount of the former boron oxide is preferred to be 0.5-10wt% of the former zinc powder. Besides, the use of a chemical compound whose general formula is either xB2O3. yH2O or xM2<1>.yB2O3.zH2O is preferred. For instance, zinc powder is added with orthoboric acid, and this mixture is compressed and molded under a pressure of 250kg/cm<2> to make a molded body. Next, the molded body undergoes a heat treatment in air at 340 deg.C for 5min to make the boric acid to be vitrified, and the vitrified molded body is cooled to obtain a molded negative electrode. |
