After surface treatment by electroplating and/or chemical means, objects are cleaned of adhering aqueous surface treatment agents, preferably in order to recover the materials contained therein. The objects to be cleaned are treated with a water-immiscible liquid solvent which has a higher or a lower density than the aqueous surface treatment agent.
