The ignition system uses spark plugs to which heated hot water is supplied in a given pumping cycle. Drops of water are delivered discretely and rapidly vaporised to provide a subsequent ignition pulse immediately after each normal spark ignition pulse, for after burning within the engine cylinder. The circulation circuit for the hot water includes a heat exchanger for heating the water via the engine exhaust gases, to recuperate some of the lost heat. Pref. the hot water is supplied via a capillary tube (12) to a wire wool insert (10) in the end of the spark plug surrounding the central spark electrode (8). This is spaced between 0.4 and 0.8 mm from an L-shaped earth electrode (9).
|
