The machine bed (1) carries outer platens (4,5) and a centre platen (6) mounted for relative movement on bearing faces (15) of guides (3) to effect the feed. The working face (7) of the centre platen, where a device for clamping the workpieces is mounted, is arranged in a vertical plane. The outer platens extend vertically and carry spindle heads (10) with axes parallel to the working face. Bearing faces of upper guides are disposed above the centre of gravity of either the workpiece platen (6) or the outer platens, whichever moves horizontally. The workpiece platen has two vertically spaced guides, or has an upper tubular guide (2) and a lower guide. The workpiece platen may be T-shaped with opposite working faces. This may be pivoted about an upper horizontal axis during return movement after machining to prevent the tools scratching the machined workpiece bores.
