Automatic control of detergent concn. in washing machines - by photoelectric monitoring of fluorescent components in wash liquor

Monitoring and controlling the rinsing process in an automatic washing machine utilises a light source and a suitable photodetector to control the addn. of washing or finishing agents such as optical brighteners to the water, and also to control the number of rinses, by monitoring the optical properties of the soln. The additives are added to the water until a pre-determined max. concn., as measured by the photodetector response, has be attained. Subsequent rinses are then performed until the concn. of brightener has fallen below a pre-set min. This method always provides the optimum amt. of additive required, irrespective of the vol. of water used, and its hardness. It ensures satisfactory results whilst economising in the consumption of water, of additives, and of power, and reducing environmental pollution.
