A driver for use, e.g. in a lathe or grinding machine comprises a member rotatable with the machine spindle, work-driving dogs 20 mounted on the member, resilient means 22, 23 acting on one side of each dog to urge them into workpiece-gripping position and power-actuated means engageable with the other side to release the dogs from the workpiece. The releasing means comprise cams 41 engageable with the dogs 20 and operable by fluid pressure operated cylinders 30. The workpiece, as shown comprising a gear blank, is located on a machine centre 45, the drive dogs 20 being pivotally mounted on a work-drive member 12 which is itself resiliently mounted by pilot members 13 on spring elements 15 in a body member 10 attached to the machine face-plate or spindle. The spring members 15 allow the work-drive member to adjust its position slightly if the workpiece surface to be gripped is slightly irregular. Fluid under pressure is supplied to the cylinders 30 through a coupling 50 and lines 51, the arrangement being such that the supply can only take place when the machine drive is stopped and a support retracted. |
