Solid carbonaceous material, e.g. coal containing less than one percent iron in the form of pyrite, is liquefied in the presence of hydrogen under pressure and in the absence of heterogeneous catalyst using a hydrogen transfer solvent which is capable of acting as a hydrogen transfer agent capable of being thermally hydrogenated and dehydrogenated in situ. Suitable hydrogen transfer solvents are pyrene, fluoranthene, anthracene, benzanthracene, dibenzanthracene, coronene, perylene, benzopyrene, benzoquinoline, acridene, azapyrene and quinoline. |
