The railway carriage heating system includes a radiator (10) extending along the floor (12) of the carriage. Cold air enters the heating chamber (20) via holes in the cover plate, and leaves via further holes (16,18) in the front and upper surfaces of the cover. Electric heating elements (56,58) lie parallel inside the heating chamber and are bolted to the front panel (22). Insulators on the bolts (68,70,72) separate the heating elements from deflectors (88) and the front panel. Some of the air heated by the electric elements rises through a space between panels (32,34) of the carriage walls to emerge through higher vents. The highest of these lie immediately below the glass of the window so that the rising hot air counteracts the effect of cold air descending from the window pane. The system provides for uniform heating of the space within the railway carriage. |
