PURPOSE:To obtain a ceramic dull roll capable of forming a uniform satin- finished surface to a rolled material, by compression molding a powdery composition composed of two specific kinds of components into a roll, sintering the formed roll and subjecting the surface of the roll to electrical discharge machining. CONSTITUTION:A roll is produced by the compression molding of a powdery composition composed of (A) at least one component selected from silicon carbide, silicon nitride, alumina, zirconia and sialon and (B) at least one component selected from carbide, nitride and boride of transition metals of group IVa, Va or VIa of the periodic table. The formed roll is sintered to obtain a sintered non-metallic roll having a density of >=96% of the theoretical density and an electrical resistivity of <=1X10<-1>OMEGAcm. The surface of the roll is machined to a surface roughness of >=2mum by electrical discharge machining. The component B is uniformly dispersed in the roll to impart the sintered roll with electrical conductivity. Minute irregularities can be formed on the roll surface by electrical discharge machining process owing to the electrical conductivity of the roll. |
