1446395 Oxirane; by-products CHEM SYSTEMS Inc 6 March 1974 [9 April 1973] 10052/74 Heading C2C Oxiranes are obtained by the deacyloxylation of vicinal hydroxyesters of carboxylic acids by contacting them in the vapour phase with a basic material, the partial pressure of the hydroxyester being not greater than 100 p.s.i.a. referred hydroxyesters are those of the formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are each H, (C 1 -C 16 )alkyl, (C 2 -C 16 )alkenyl, (C 2 -C 16 )alkynyl, aryl, CN or R 6 CO- wherein R 6 is H, alkyl or alkoxy; R 1 and R 4 may be linked to form a C 4 -C 16 ring, and the said hydrocarbon groups may be substituted or unsubstituted. Preferred basic materials are alkaline carboxylates, e.g. Group I, II and IIIa basic metal carboxylates. Other basic materials are MgCO 3 , BaO, ZnO, NiO and sodium pyrophosphate, also organic bases absorbed on to a support. The process may be performed continuously. Aldehydes, ketones and alcohols are obtained as by-products in the above process.
|
