PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, by the reaction of inexpensive p-tolualdehyde with CO and water in the presence of Rh or an Rh compound and HI in a specific molar ratio as a catalyst, and by the subsequent reduction of the resultant p-methylphenylacetic acid with H2 in the presence of Re and an organic base. CONSTITUTION:p-Tolualdehyde is reacted with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of Rh or an Rh compound, e.g. rhodium trichloride, and a catalyst consisting of hydrogen iodide in a molar (or gram-atom) ratio to an above-mentioned Rh or an Rh compound of 1-10, to prepare p-methylphenylacetic acid, which is then reduced with hydrogen in the presence of Re or an Re compound, e.g. dirhenium heptoxide, and an organic base, e.g. triethylamine, as catalysts, to give p-methylphenethyl alcohol. EFFECT:The aimed compound may be produced in high purity and yield in a relatively short state. USE:An intermediate for a medicine and an agricultural chemical. |
