A support apparatus includes a vertical column (1), a horizontal shaft (4), rotatable about its axis and mounted on a carriage (6) carried by the column, an attachment means (5) for the workpiece mounted on the shaft (4), and locking means (24, 25) for preventing rotation of the shaft, and is distinguished in that the carriage (6) is vertically displaceable along the column by a jack mounted on the column. The jack comprises a manually pumpable hydraulic cylinder (7) which is mounted at the upper portion of the column (1), the piston rod (11) of the hydraulic cylinder carrying a pulley (12) for a wire (14) which is attached to the column, runs over the pulley (12) and round a pulley (13) rigidly mounted in the upper portion of the column, and is anchored to the carriage (6) so that the vertical motion of the carriage is twice as large as the stroke of the piston rod (11).
