Rolling mill with tow interchangeable work rolls - driven by cardan shafts which are slowly rotated by auxiliary drive unit when coupling shafts to rolls

Each work roll is connected by a cardan shaft to a pinion in a pinion stand; and the two pinions are driven by a motor via a coupling. Each work roll ends in a male countering and coupling peg, which fits in a corresp. socket in one end of the cardan shaft. To simplify the insertion of the peg in the socket, each cardan shaft is slowly rotated by an auxiliary drive unit. The unit is pref. connected by an auxiliary shaft to a reducing gearbox; or may use gears or a toothed belt to rotate the coupling located between the motor and pinion stand. Position indicators are pref. used to actuate the unit. Rapid coupling of the cardan shafts to the work rolls after the latter have been replaced is obtd.
