<p>The object of the separator is to damp out long wave-length mechanical oscillations in parallel conductors, especially in long spans between support towers. The separator comprises a clamp (1,2) at each end by which it is attached to the respective cables (22). Attached to each clamp by a pivot pin is a link (5,6) typically of flat bar with a 90 degree twist in it. Joining the two twisted links (5,6) are two straight links (3,4) in parallel. The joints between the sets of links are also pivot points. In this way a spacer with two planes of movement is produced. The separator functions satisfactorily with regard to spacing the conductors and damping long wave oscillations regardless of the relative position of the two conductors to one another in space. The separator prevents vibration of conductors caused by aerodynamic instability at high wind speeds, typically 8 to 20 meters per second, and when the conductors are covered with flat ice.</p> |
