The water softener for a dishwashing machine uses an ion exchanger (18) coupled to the fresh water feed line (12) via a programme-controlled valve (13). Water is also fed from this feed line (12) to a water container (21) enclosed on all sides with an output line (23) leading to a salt container (25), coupled via a regeneration line (27) with a control valve (28) to the ion exchanger (18). The sealed top section (22) of the water container (21) is inserted in an interruption in the feed line (12) after the programme-controlled valve (13) and before a free flow section (16) of the line (12). Pref. the control valve (28) in the regeneration line (27) and an input control valve (24) for the salt container (25) are both programme-controlled in conjunction with the programme-controlled intake valve (13).
