A surgical clip or clamp for constricting blood vessels comprises a wire or strip bent at each end in the same direction laterally of the wire or strip to form a straight portion 23 with a hook 26 at one end an an arcuate portion 24 at the, other end, the hook and arcuate portion being spaced from each other at their free ends, there being a bend (29) in a direction opposite to the bends forming the hook and arcuate portion where the hook and straight portion join so that portions of the hook lie on each side of the longitudinal axis of the straight portion. The clip may be made of stainless steel wire flattened on opposite sides (38, 40, Figures 6 and 7) and having rounded edges. In use, the clip is located between the jaws 11, 12 of an applicator so that the straight portion 23 and the arcuate portion 24 are received in opposing longitudinal grooves 16, (17) in the jaws, the clip is held around a blood vessel (30) by the applicator and the jaws are closed to deform the clip so that the straight and arcuate portions approach one another to constrict the blood vessel and the point (33) of the arcuate portion enters the hook 26 to secure the clip in closed position about the blood vessel. The jaws are operated by handles 14, 15 on the inside of one of which a member (44) (Figures 8 and 9) having a projection (47) is pivotal between a position in which it is received in recesses in the handles to permit closure of the jaws and a position in which the projection prevents complete closure of the jaws but permits retention of the clip so that inadvertent closure of the clip may be prevented. |
