PURPOSE:To remarkably reduce the optical loss of an optical transmission material by treating the surfaces of core and clad materials with a halogen gas in a vapor phase prior to melt sticking to improve the interfacial state of the materials. CONSTITUTION:A quartz glass core material is polished mechanically or chemically or heat treated and put into a similarly treated quartz glass clad material. They are then melt stuck to each other by heating and spun to manufacture an optical transmission material. At this time, prior to the melt sticking at least one kind of halogen gas is fed into the gap between the core and clad materials, and the materials are heated to 500-1,600 deg.C. As a result, the sticking interface between the materials is purified, resulting in a remarkably reduced optical loss. |
