A method of providing strip metal with a predetermined edgewise camber comprises the steps of moving the strip lengthwise from a reel thereof and at a predetermined position along the path of the strip imparting thereto a permanent tensile strain by locally longitudinally tensioning the strip by increasing the linear speed thereof progressively across the width of the strip, and maintaining tension in the strip as it is moved away from said position. Metal strip 1 is drawn from a reel 2 to pass around driven cylindrical rollers 3, 4, 5 and 6, a driven cylindrical roller 7 acting as a pinch roller in co-operation with the rollers 4 and 6. A frusto-conical roller 8 co-operates with the roller 6 and is driven at a speed such that its minimum circumferential velocity, at the small end, is greater than the circumferential velocity of the roller 6. This causes the strip to be stretched, an amount progressively increasing across the width thereof thus to cause the strip to curve edgewise. The curved or cambered strip then passes driven frusto-conical rollers 9, 10, 11, 12 to be rewound loosely at 13. The roller 6 may be carried by bearings mounted on flexure strips and pre-loaded towards the roller 8 by adjustable spring means.</p> |
