A false-twist crimped yarn is overfed to a package such that its length on the package is at least 40% greater than its totally released length but not more than a third of its original length. Yarns may thus be wound on a false twist crimping machine having the take-up packages disposed above or below the falsetwist spindles through which the yarns pass vertically upwards, a shield being provided between the spindles and the yarn path down to the lower take-up packages. Alternatively, the yarns may be wound on a separate machine having a heater plate between the yarn feed rolls and the take-up packages. To avoid "high end" formation on the take-up package due to the low yarn tension the traversing guide is reciprocated through a device which scatters the mid-points of successive reciprocations. A static eliminator which produces a field of ionized air or which contacts the yarn may be provided adjacent the rolls which feed the yarn to the take-up package. The yarn may be composed of nylon, a polyester or a polyolefine.</p> |
