A starting and overload protection device for an electric induction motor utilises a posistor (6) as an automatic switch for cutting off the flow of current to an auxiliary winding (13) after a short interval of time from initial switch-on thus diverting the main line current to the motor to the main stator winding (14), and a dished disc temperature operated switch (2) which is mounted centrally to allow the disc to spring from a convex to a concave configuration. A resistor carrying the line current motor produces localised heating in the region of the disc switch (2) and causes the disc switch (2) to flip and break the circuit in the event that the line current to the motor exceeds a design value for a given period of time. The posistor (6) and the temperature operated switch (2) are mounted within a single housing, Fig. 1 (not shown), adapted to be connected to the electricity supply main via terminals (3, 4) and having pins extending from the rear of the housing to allow it to be plugged into a socket (not shown) mounted directly on a motor-compressor unit.

|
