The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for the positioning and guiding of opposing edges of plate metal in such a way that the edges are progressively guided into an essentially close connection with one another, so that such edges can thereafter be welded in order to form a seam. The apparatus comprises three interchangeable elements 24, 25 and 26, which together form opposing and converging guide channels 46, 47, which progressively direct the edges of the plate metal into a close connection and maintain such a connection whilst the plate metal is introduced into a seam welder. The top and bottom guide elements 25 and 26 can be provided with lug parts, which extend outwards from the outlet end of the central interchangeable guide element 24 to a point close to the welder. Another object is to provide a method for seam welding of opposing edges of plate metal by constantly pressing the edges, which are in an overlapping connection, in an essentially close connection and then welding in a seam welder. <IMAGE>
