The invention relates to a process for making optic fibres. It includes a stage for introducing, into a glass tube 1, a stream of a reaction gas for depositing on the inside surface at least one thin layer of glass with a refractive index different from that of the glass tube itself. It also comprises a stage for heating the reaction gas and the inside of the glass tube to the required temperature for the deposition of a thin layer of glass. In the next stage, the glass tube is heated to a temperature required for making it collapse, so that a solid core is formed. The collapsed glass tube is then drawn out to form the optic fibre. In the process according to the invention, not only the stream of reaction gas is introduced into the glass tube but also a stream of an exothermically reacting gas whose flow is regulated separately from that of the reaction gas.
