摘要 Olefin polymers of 8-16 carbon atoms are obtained by polymerizing a normally gaseous olefin in the presence of an activated carbon supported cobalt oxide catalyst which has been activated by heating at 200-350 DEG C., preferably in a non-oxidizing medium, preferably under conditions of 0-200 DEG C. and 0-2,500 p.s.i.g. to form a C4-C8 dimer, containing at least 85% by weight of straight chain olefins and branched chain olefins containing only a single substituent and polymerizing this in the presence of an activated carbon supported cobalt oxide catalyst activated by heating at 400-575 DEG C. preferably in a non-oxidizing medium, preferably under conditions of 50-250 DEG C. and 0-2,500 p.s.i.g. to obtain a C8-C16 dimer fraction. The activated carbon is preferably acid washed and/or treated with a nonoxidizing gas or liquid, particularly ammonia then impregnated to introduce 2-30% cobalt oxide for the first stage catalyst and 2-50% for the second stage catalyst. The catalyst is then dried and activated. The olefins may be used in the production of detergents containing C8-C16 alkyl groups, e.g. where the alkyl group is connected to a sulphonate radical directly or through an ester, ether or amide group or to an aryl sulphonate directly or through an ester, ether or amide group. In particular alkyl aryl sulphonates are obtaining by alkylating an aromatic hydrocarbon with the olefin in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, sulphonating and neutralizing.
