In order to avoid pressing tracks in sewing machines, sewing is carried out with a rotating pressing-track inhibitor (7) introduced between the fabric web (5) and the pressing body. In the sewing machine serving for carrying out the method, a rotating band forms the pressing-track inhibitor (7), the band running through guides (8, 11) which are provided on the table board (1) and which are adjustable transversely to the run-through direction.
