The rotary piston machine comprises pairs of pistons (I, II and III, IV) interacting with annular cams (21, 22) coaxial with a drive shaft (19), in order to convert the reciprocating movement of the pistons into a continuous rotational movement of the drive shaft and vice versa. Each of the pistons interacts with one of the two cams. The two pistons of each pair (23a, 23b and 23c, 23d) are coaxial and the pairs of pistons are mechanically independent of each other. The axes (16, 17) of the pairs of pistons are distributed over a circle which is concentric with the drive shaft. <IMAGE>
