In a stranding machine comprising a plurality of aligned, hollow shafts each having a pair of bobbins rotatably mounted thereon (one such shaft 5 and one of its bobbins 8 being shown), one bobbin of each pair being used for stranding whilst the other is winding up fresh wire and then the roles of the two bobbins being exchanged, a braking means (not shown) is provided to regulate the tension in the wire 2 as it is drawn from the stranding bobbin and guided into the hollow shaft 5 through which it is drawn to the stranding station. Thus, the wire passes over a pulley 41 carried by a lever 36, the movement of which under the action of the wire tension (opposed by a spring) is used to regulate a braking force on the bobbin 8. As the machine stops and the consequent reduction in wire tension is sensed, maximum braking torque is applied to the bobbin 8. For use of that bobbin in the next phase (rewinding) the brake is readily disengaged altogether. <IMAGE> |
