A rotatable roller 17 (see Fig. 3) presses against the edge carrying the flap of an unsealed envelope 21 to make a space between the flap and envelope into which a moistening tongue 5 is inserted. The envelopes, fed by a travelling belt 30, pass under a pressure lever 23, and into contact with the double-cone roller 17. A sponge strip 10, one end of which projects into a tank 2 of water, is attached to the underside of the tongue 5. After the envelope has passed over the moistening tongue 5, a pressure roller (not shown) presses the moistened flap against the rear of the envelope. The roller 17 can be made from friction resistant plastics material. |
