The exhaust duct 1 of an aircraft jet engine is provided with a valve member 6 movable to proportion the exhaust flow to a horizontal nozzle 5 for forward thrust and to a vertical nozzle 4 for lift thrust, the vertical nozzle 4 having a smaller outlet cross-section than the horizontal nozzle so that during the short periods when the vertical nozzle is operative the compressor of the engine works nearer a surge condition and thus provides a greater thrust. The Specification describes how the size of the smaller nozzle is selected using data obtained from the compressor's characteristic curves. |
