<p>A partially rotary joint for an artificial knee is based on a spherical knot fitted with a polyethylene cap. Other components include shock-absorbent pads of rubber on a moulded polyethylene base to support the flanks of the cup joint riding on the sphere, when the joint is straight. A self-locking tension to hold the joint straight is provided by either a helical spring or an elastic strap extending between the upper and lower members via an opening provided in the moulded joint platform. The straight structural members, to replace or complement natural limb bones, are of duraluminium tube. A pair of moulded polyethylene wedges are provided for sliding adjustment of the friction of rotation of the rotary joints.</p> |
