2-ArY-5-Ar'-7-R1-3H-1, 4- benzodiazepines of formula (I) are new (where Y is O, S or NH; Ar is phenyl opt. monosubstd. by Cl, Br, NO2, 1-3C alkoxy, NH2, acetamido, di(1-3C alkyl)amino, di(1-3C alkyl)aminoalkyl, COOH, 2-4C alkoxycarbonyl or CONH2; Ar' is phenyl, o-fluorophenyl or o-chlorophenyl; R1 is F, Cl, Br or NO2). 7-Chloro-5-(2-chlorophenyl)2-(4- dimethylaminomethylphenoxy)-3H-1, 4-benzodiazepine. (I) are anticonvulsants useful for treating epilepsy; they have higher anticonvulsant activity and lower general tranquillising activity than diazepam.
