A pneumatic tyre comprises a carcass 1 with a hard rubber tread 3 and relatively softer rubber side-walls 2 and a plurality of parallel and reinforcing inserts 4 ... 7, the axial width B 1 and B 2 of each of which is either less than 95% or more than 105% of the tread width L, the radially-outermost annular edge of at least one of the side-walls extending between the carcass and the widest of the inserts with an overlap of at least 10% of the width of said widest insert, and the insert 7 lying immediately adjacent the carcass having an axial width B 1 of 50 to 80% of the width of the widest insert. The radius of curvature r of the tread edges is between 8 and 20% of L. In one embodiment including parallel card inserts of differing widths, the card directions of adjacent inserts are mutually at right-angles, and the sum of the axial width of these inserts in which the cards run in one direction is substantially equal to the sum of the axial widths of the inserts whose cards run in the other direction. |
