In a process for smelting storage battery scrap in particular, the lead is reduced and the antimony oxidised in a first stage, initially under weakly reducing conditions. The primary antimony-rich slag produced in this process is separated from the low-antimony lead melt and then processed in a second stage under strongly reducing conditions to produce an antimony-rich crude lead. The final slag of the second process stage can be dumped without problems.
