Veneer for finishing substrates consists of a paper fibre compsn. laminate impregnated with a resin. The fibre compsn. consists of almost equal amts. by wt. of long and short fibres and the fibres ahve a fineness of over 25 (30-35) deg. SR. The fibre compsn. pref. contains 50 wt.% long and 50 wt.% short fibres. Pref. it is free from Al ions. Pref. the veneer contains over 93 (over 96.5)% dry matter. Besides being impregnated, the veneer is also pref. coated on at least one surface with a resin, esp. of the same impregnant as the core impregnant. Urea-HCHO resins and (self-crosslinking) acrylic resin dispersions, pref. contg. a hardener (NH4Cl) are pref. Thin, lightweight veneers with very high strength can be made on a paper machine easily and at high throughput. It is useful for coating plywood, chipboard etc., esp. for furniture, and is not penetrated by glue.
