Vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers are crosslinked by mixing 100 parts of the polymer with at least 5 parts of metal oxide, 0.5-5.0 parts of cross-linking accelerator, a plasticizer and a stabilizer and heating the mixture to above 130 DEG C. The copolymer may be vinyl chloride/vinyl alkyl, e.g. isobutyl, ether or vinyl aliphatic ester copolymer. The metal oxide may be one or more oxides of zinc, lead, magnesium, antimony, calcium, iron, cadmium or barium. The cross-linking accelerator may be 2-mercapto-imidazoline, 2-mercapto-thiazoline or the diorthotolyl guanidine salt of dicatechol borate. The plasticizer may be dioctyl phthalate. The stabilizer may be basic lead carbonate, sulphate or sulphite. At least 5 parts of a filler, e.g. carbon black, calcium carbonate, clay, talc, silica or diatomaceous earth, may be added to the mixture before heating for crosslinking. |
