A rotary abrasive device comprises a cylindrical housing 10 supporting a plurality of radiallyextending brushes 46 adjacent respective longitudinal slots 20 through which abrasive ribbons 16 extend, the inner ends of the ribbons being attached to a polygonal reel sleeve 14 which fits over a core 24 having a plurality of lugs 26 extending radially therefrom into the corners of the polygonal sleeve, the core being rotatably adjustable with respect to the housing 10 to adjust the length of ribbon extending from each slot. As described, the reel sleeve 14, which may be of cardboard, is square and two ribbons of abrasive are attached by staples 18 to each face. Each ribbon, when the device is assembled, extends through a separate slot 20 so as to be backed by a brush 46 having bristles bonded in a base 48 received in a holder 42 adjacent the slot, a spring 50 locking the base in the holder. One end of the housing is closed by an end wall 12 whereas the other end can be closed by a disc 28 which has a knurled periphery and to which is attached the core 24 formed with four lugs 26 for fitting into the corners of the reel when assembled. A spindle 30 is mounted within the housing 10 and has a threaded end which extends through the disc and is engaged by a knurled nut 34. The lower ends of the lugs have projections 58 which engage in slots 56 in the wall 12 of the housing and provide means for indexing the core and reel relative to the housing when the nut 34 is slackened and the disc rotated to feed out the abrasive ribbons 16 as they wear. The housing is formed with a hub 36 whereby the device can be mounted on a shaft. |
