A coat hook comprises a flange 40 on a shaft 28 which is withdrawable against the pressure of a spring 36 from a housing 14 secured to a panel 12. The shaft has a flattened surface non rotatably to engage an end opening of the housing. One end of the spring 36 abuts a washer 32 which is slidable within the housing. The hook is withdrawn by the weight of an article to be suspended thereby and retracts automatically when the article is removed from the hook.
