This invention provides a method and apparatus for the continuous crystallisation of dissolved solids from solution and in particular to the recovery of pickling solution by the continuous removal of contaminating salts. The solution is continuously fed through a crystallisation unit 14 where it is cooled so that the dissolved solids crystallise out and separate from the stripped solution under gravity, the flow of stripped solution out of the crystallisation unit changing in direction so that it moves in a counter flow to the flow of crystallised solid under the influence of gravity. The crystallisation unit 14 comprises a primary cooling column 13 whose upper end outlet leads to the upper end of secondary cooling column 15. The lower end of column 15 opens into settling tank 16 which has a lower outlet for removal of crystallised solids and an upper outlet for stripped solution.
