The antibiotic BC 757, also known as pleuromutilin, is prepared by cultivating Clitopilus passeckerianus (Pil.) Sing. NRRL 3100, or a pleuromutilin-producing mutant or variant thereof, in an aqueous nutrient medium containing assimilable sources of carbon and nitrogen. The antibiotic may be isolated by conventional methods for the isolation of pleuromutilin from a fermentation broth. Pleuromutilin is a growth stimulant and may be added to animal feeds to form a feed supplement or a ready-mixed feed. For this purpose, the dried fermentation broth may be used. Conventional feed supplements containing penicillium mycelia may be used. |
