The driving mirror is dimmed by applying electrical potential to a liq. crystal layer so that it causes a shading effect and disturbing reflective caused e.g. by following vehicles can be avoided. A potentiometer can be used to match the intensity of reflected radiation and the sensitivity of the driver's eyes. The nematic liq. crystal (1) is housed in an hermetically sealed cell formed from opposed glass plates (2). Polarisation filters (4a,4b) on the outer sides of the cell are so orientated that the polarisation directions cross and the cell is transparent when no potential is applied to the electrodes. Incident light (5) reaches the glass mirror (6) with the reflective layer (7) with the same direction of oscillation.
|
