The leading or trailing axles are provided to increase the load- carrying capacity of a heavy lorry or bus. They are selectively steerable or fixed in the straight position. The leading or trailing axle is set to the straight position when the vehicle's speed and/or the braking pressure of the braking medium exceeds a certain value and/or when the turning circle of the wheels controllable by the steering exceeds a certain value. The force bringing the trailing or leading axle into the straight position is increased as the vehicle's speed and braking pressure increases and the steering effective force decreases. The adjustment of the manoeuvrability of the trailing or leading axle is carried out at a higher speed and/or braking pressure or by a lesser steering effective force than by it disengagement.
