Plastic foam is processed into reeled strips, using filled foam with delayed elastic recovery, compressing it, reeling it up, and slicing to produce a number of narrow reels of desired width. Immediately after compressing, the foam is passed between non-driven spring-loaded thin cutting discs and a counter-pressure roller, each gap between adjacent discs being the desired final width. The fig. shows a web (1) of foam material with filled pores which only slowly recovers its original shape after compression. It (1) is coated with adhesive on the underside and is combined with a strippable film (2); it is passed over a support surface (3) and is compressed by a roller (4). While remaining compressed, it moves over a roller (5) beneath a set of thin cutter discs (6) which are pressurised by springs or compressed air (7). Process dispenses with high speed cutters and their frictional/thermal/rough edges problems even with thick material.
|
