The rotor of a centrifuge for separating crude oil into an oil fraction, a water fraction and a water-solids mixture or sludge fraction comprises a separating chamber 13 of doublecone-shaped configuration defined by conical portions of interlocked lower and upper members 11, 12 of the rotor bowl and containing a stack of frusto-conical separator discs 35. The lower member 11 is closed at its bottom end by means of an integral hub portion 14 to which the rotor shaft 21 is secured. A feed distributor 22 mounted within the rotor bowl has a slightly upwardly tapered top end portion 23 provided internally with impeller ribs 25 and externally with ribs 26 defining channels 28 for the flow of the separated oil fraction from between the discs 35 towards an overflow edge 20. The distributor has a flared intermediate portion 29 formed on its underside with radially extending Channels which together with the hub portion constitute feed conduits 29a, Fig. 3 (not shown), for conveying the crude oil feed into vertical perforated feed distribution tubes 29c penetrating the stack of discs. A lower, frusto-conical, upturned portion 30 of the distributor is formed with fan-shaped recesses 31, Fig. 5 (not shown), which together with the adjoining wall of the rotor bowl constitutes the wide-mouth entrance sections 31a of a set of convergent outflow conduits L for the separated water fraction. These recesses 31 are located opposite sludge discharge nozzles 16, Fig. 2 (not shown), and alternate with inwardly facing recesses 32 which accommodate divergently extending inflow conduits 33 extending into passages 34 in the hub portion 14. A detachable annular structure S is connected to the underside of the hub portion 14 and accommodates a hollow insert member 42 defining a downwardly open annular chamber D into which the water fraction flows from the wide-mouth section 31 a via convergent tubular members 48 located in openings 46, 47 in the member 42 and the hub portion 14 respectively. The water fraction, discharges over a dam 45 at the bottom of the chamber D. The hub portion 14, the structure S and the member 42 together define a chamber 43 which is adapted to receive return sludge with or without wash water auxiliary liquid, or auxiliary liquid only, which is urged by vanes 55 through the conduits 33 into the separating chamber 13 in the region between the nozzles 16. |
