1,108,622. Diverting propulsive thrusts. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 25 Feb., 1966, No. 8535/66. Heading B7G. A jet propulsion engine has a jet pipe comprising a fixed portion 15 and rotatable portions 16, 17, 18 arranged in series, adjacent end faces of adjacent rotatable portions being inclined to the axes of the portions and being provided with epicyclic gears 33, 62 comprising annulus gears (36), (37) (Fig. 3 not shown) engaged by planet wheels (35) on a non-rotating ring (34) so that if one rotatable portion is rotated in one direction, the adjacent rotatable portion rotates in the opposite direction. The upstream rotatable portion 16 is rotatable by a motor 31 and the non-rotating rings of the epicyclic gears 33, 62 have rollers 44, 57 engaging tracks 45, 56 respectively to prevent their rotating. The track 56 is on an arm fixed to a ring 50 in which the portion 17 rotates, and is itself prevented from rotating by an arm carrying a roller engaging a track in a member 46, this track providing for thermal expansion. |
