Process for prodn. of composite filaments comprises (a) forming the components of the composite product by splitting a single stream of molten, fibre-forming polymer into separate measured component streams, (b) modifying at least one of the component streams by incorporating a measured amt. of a liquid which is capable of altering the melt visc. of the polymer under the melt extrusion conditions by reaction with the polymer, (c) bringing together the separate component streams to form at least one composite stream, and (d) converting the composite stream into filaments. The method enables composite filaments to be produced reproducibly, with low variation in the difference in intrinsic viscosity between the filaments. The two components may be side by side, or one component may be enclosed within the other. The composite filaments have good crimping properties. |
