PRODUCTION OF FOOD OR FEEDSTUFF FROM RAW EUPHAUSIA MATERIAL

Process is for making a foodstuff from a macro plankton knill esp. Euphansidae. First fresh knill is milled in a hammer mill so that the flesh still retains some of its fibrous structure. The resulting mixt. of flesh and shell is sepd. in a centrifuge of the decanter type. The flesh fraction is heated in a heat exchanger to 40-60 deg.C and fed into a holding tank. It is subjected to a further centrifuging after holding at 70-95 deg.C for 1-5 min. This removes excess liq. which is reheated and recycled. Some of the liq. is passed to a different centrifuge before it is discharged. The process provides a useful source of food from the macro plankton Euphasidae from the Antarctic. It gives good sepn. of the fish shell from the flesh.
