Machine for slicing a roll of fabric into smaller widths comprises a rotating holder for the roll and a rotating blade at right angles to the axis of the holder, with a mechanism to move blade and fabric relative to each other. The mechanism has a friction clutch to produce the relative motion which is slipped to halt the movement when the pressure between blade and roll exceeds a particular value. The pressure of the blade against the fabric is regulated automatically, to prevent overheating of the blade and damage to the fabric.
