PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, useful as a synthetic intermediate of complicated organic compounds, inexpensively and in high yield by the oxidation of acetic acid in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal iodide, metal acetate or metal oxide, and iodine. CONSTITUTION:Acetic acid is made to react with O2 in the presence of a catalyst comprising a mixed solution of an alkali metal iodide (e.g. KI), a metal acetate (e.g. manganese acetate) or a metal oxide (e.g. V2O5), and iodine to give acetoxyacetic acid. The reaction temp. is pref. 120-180 deg.C and the pressure of O2 is pref. 1-30kg/cm<2>. The formulation of the catalyst is 1 (metal acetate or oxide): 5-200 (alkali metal iodide): 1-100 (iodine) in a molar ratio. |
