In the production of thin-walled containers which are drawn from film material and have a bottom and a folded wall, a film workpiece is deformed into a concave shape by drawing with a punch (50). This punch is surrounded by an upper guiding part (38) and a lower guiding part (46) for the circumferential part of the workpiece. The guiding parts have radial webs (60, 62) which operate in such a way that alternate upward- and downward-pointing tooth-shaped depressions are initially impressed in the workpiece. In the subsequent drawing operation for the formation of the container wall, the still approximately flat region adjoining the container base is drawn by means of groove-drawing devices (98). The grooves formed in this process run into the tooth-shaped depressions, the excess of material due to the shortening of the circumference being laid in regular flat double folds.
