The waveguide has a flange at each end. The flange's inner dimensions are roughly equal to the outer dimensions of the waveguide. The flange is fitted onto the end of the waveguide and the gap between flange and waveguide is fitted with a conducting compound. The flange is then connected to the waveguide by electrolysis. The end of the waveguide projects beyond the flange. The waveguide is fabricated inexpensively and with no waste. The metallic joint produced by electrolysis is tough enough to withstand all normal stresses to which a waveguide is subject.
