Hydroxy-indene cpds. - useful as in prepn. of carbamate and organo-phosphate agrochemicals, and as starting material for novolak resins

Indene cpds. of formula (I) are new. In (I) R1,R2,R3,R4 and R5 are each H or 1-4C alkyl; X is H, halogen, acyl, alkoxy, nitrile, nitro or amino x and y are O or positive integer; z is positive integer; and x+y+z =4. Prepn. of (I) comprises heat-decomposing a cpd. of formula (II): when Y is H, halogen, acyl, alkoxy, nitrile, nitro, amino; x' and y' are o or positive integer; z' is positive integer; R6 is H or 1-4C alkyl; Y is equal to X and x'+y'+z' =5) in the presence of acid or alkali catalyst. (I) is useful as starting material for the prepn. of carbamate type and organic phosphate type agricultural chemicals. The polymer of (I) can be used as starting material for novolak resin. (I) can be polymerised with other vinyl polymer to give the new copolymers, and these can be used for coating or adhesion.
